Frequently Asked Questions
What is a CBT test?
A CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) is not a pass/fail test in the traditional sense — it is a training course that results in a certificate. You spend a full day learning basic riding skills on-site, then ride on the road under instructor supervision. Your instructor signs off your DL196 certificate when you have demonstrated the required standard.
How do I find a CBT near Warrington?
On Your Bike is a DVSA-approved CBT training provider based at Bell Lane, Thelwall, Warrington WA4 2SX. We offer CBT training for complete beginners from £130. Call 01925 551 555 or visit onyour.bike to check available dates.
How much does a CBT cost?
CBT training at On Your Bike starts from £130, which includes use of a training motorcycle and all protective equipment. There are no hidden extras. The DVSA motorcycle theory test (£23) is the only separate cost if you have not already passed it.
Do I need a CBT if I already have a car licence?
Yes. A full car licence does not automatically entitle you to ride a motorcycle or moped. You must complete a CBT certificate before riding on public roads. The only exception is full car licences issued before 1 February 2001, which include automatic entitlement to ride mopeds up to 50cc.
How long is a CBT certificate valid?
A CBT certificate (DL196) is valid for two years. If you have not passed your full motorcycle test by the time it expires, you must retake the CBT to continue riding legally as a learner. There is no limit on how many times you can renew it.
How old do I need to be to take a CBT?
You must be at least 16 to complete a CBT on a moped (up to 50cc). To ride a 125cc motorcycle on a CBT certificate you must be 17 or over. You will also need to hold a provisional driving licence.
What should I bring on my CBT day?
Bring your provisional driving licence (both parts if paper licence), your National Insurance number, and suitable clothing — sturdy boots that cover the ankle, long trousers, and a long-sleeved top. On Your Bike provides helmets and hi-vis jackets. Comfortable, non-baggy clothes are recommended.
