How Old Do You Have to Be to Ride a Motorbike in the UK?
The minimum age to ride a motorbike in the UK depends on the type of machine. You can ride a 50 cc moped from age 16, complete CBT and ride a 125 cc motorcycle from age 17, take an A1 licence from 17, an A2 licence from 19, and a full A licence from 21 (progressive access) or 24 (Direct Access).
Age 16 — 50 cc Mopeds
At age 16 you can apply for a provisional licence and complete CBT to ride a moped (up to 50 cc, speed limited to 30 mph). You must display L-plates and cannot carry a pillion passenger or ride on motorways. This is the earliest you can legally ride any powered two-wheeler on UK public roads.
Age 17 — 125 cc Motorcycles and A1 Licence
At 17 you can complete CBT and ride a motorcycle up to 125 cc with L-plates on a provisional licence. You can also work towards an A1 licence (up to 11 kW / 15 bhp) by passing the theory test, Module 1, and Module 2 on a 125 cc machine. An A1 licence removes L-plate restrictions for machines up to 125 cc.
Age 19 — A2 Licence
From age 19 you can take your A2 licence test. This allows you to ride bikes up to 35 kW (approximately 47 bhp) without L-plates. The A2 is the most popular licence for adult riders who want a proper motorcycle but are not yet old enough for Direct Access.
Age 21 — Progressive Access to Full A Licence
If you have held an A2 licence for at least two years, you can upgrade to a full A licence from age 21 by passing Module 1 and Module 2 on a Category A bike. This is known as progressive access. You do not need to complete full DAS training — just the two DVSA tests.
Age 24 — Direct Access Scheme (Full A Licence)
From age 24 you can take the Direct Access Scheme and train directly on a large motorcycle, skipping A1 and A2 entirely. Pass the theory test, Module 1, and Module 2 and you receive a full Category A licence with no restrictions. This is the fastest route to a full licence for adult learners.
