Getting Here by Car from Widnes
From Widnes town centre, head east on the A562 towards Warrington. This road takes you across — or alongside — the River Mersey and connects you directly into the Warrington road network. Once into Warrington, follow signs south towards Stockton Heath, then pick up the signs for Thelwall. Bell Lane sits in the heart of Thelwall village and parking is available on site at the Parish Hall. The total drive is around 7–8 miles and typically takes 15–20 minutes depending on traffic.
It’s worth noting that the Mersey Gateway is a tolled crossing — you’ll need to pay via the Merseyflow system before midnight on the day of your journey if you use the bridge. The good news is that motorcycles are exempt from the toll, so once you’re licenced and on two wheels, crossing the Mersey costs you nothing at all.
Getting Here by Public Transport from Widnes
By Bus
Arriva North West runs a frequent service — approximately every 20 minutes — directly from Widnes to Warrington Bus Interchange, with a journey time of around 28 minutes. Once at the interchange, switch to the 5A bus operated by Warrington’s Own Buses heading towards Lymm, and alight at Thelwall, Pickering Arms. Bell Lane and the Parish Hall are a short walk from there. Total journey time from Widnes by public transport is approximately 50–55 minutes.
By Train
Widnes and Hough Green stations are both on the Liverpool to Manchester line. From either station, local buses connect into Widnes town centre where you can pick up the Warrington service to the interchange.
About Widnes
Widnes is a town with real industrial character, historically known as one of Britain’s most important centres of the chemical industry. Before the Industrial Revolution it was a small settlement, but it grew rapidly after the establishment of chemical factories in the mid-19th century. Today the town has diversified, with Spike Island — the old industrial heartland — now a popular open recreation area with riverside footpaths along the Sankey Canal towpath.
The town is well connected eastwards to Warrington via the A562, and the main roads out of Widnes — the A557 and A562 — are exactly the kind of mixed urban and semi-rural roads you’ll encounter during CBT training, making the experience feel immediately relevant to everyday riding.
CBT FAQ
The questions Widnes riders actually ask us before they book.
Do I need to pay the Mersey Gateway toll to get to training from Widnes?
If you’re driving to your CBT session, yes — the Mersey Gateway is a tolled crossing and you’ll need to pay via the Merseyflow system online or by phone before midnight on the day. If you forget, you can pay up to midnight the following day for a slightly higher fee. The A562 east from Widnes is the most direct route to us, and it’s a straightforward drive once you’re across. The silver lining: once you’ve passed your full test and you’re riding a motorcycle, you won’t pay a penny — motorcycles are exempt from the toll.
What’s the best route for a 125cc commute from Widnes to Warrington once I’ve got my CBT?
The A562 east is the natural commuter route from Widnes to Warrington — it’s direct, well-surfaced and you’ll know it well as a driver. On a 125cc on L-plates, you can ride on any public road except motorways, so the A562 is perfectly legal and very manageable. For a more relaxed ride, some Widnes riders prefer the quieter roads through Moore and Daresbury heading east, which are lovely on two wheels and not significantly longer. Once you’re ready to progress to a full licence, the whole motorway network opens up and the commute becomes even faster.
What are the best rides from Widnes once I’ve got my CBT?
You’re in a great position. The roads heading east through Moore and Daresbury are quiet, well-surfaced country lanes — ideal for early confidence-building on L-plates. Head south through Runcorn and across the bridge and you’re into Cheshire proper, with the Frodsham hills and the Delamere Forest roads within easy reach. When you’re ready to push further, the A56 south from Warrington opens up the whole of Cheshire. Many Widnes riders come to us for their CBT and return for their full licence once they’ve had a season on the road — we’re well worth the trip across the Mersey.
