Getting Here by Car from Runcorn
From Runcorn, the most direct route is to head north across the Mersey Gateway Bridge on the A533, then pick up the A56 heading north-east towards Warrington. As you approach Warrington, follow the road south through Stockton Heath and into Thelwall village, where Bell Lane is clearly signposted. The total journey is around 9 miles and typically takes 15–20 minutes in normal traffic.
Note that the Mersey Gateway is a tolled crossing — pay via the Merseyflow system before midnight on the day. Motorcycles are exempt from the toll, so once you’re licenced, crossing the Mersey costs nothing. Alternatively, from Runcorn East you can head east on the A56 directly towards Warrington and Thelwall, avoiding the bridge entirely.

About Runcorn
Runcorn is a town with a genuinely fascinating history. It was founded by Æthelflæd of Mercia in 915 AD as a fortification against Viking invasion at a narrowing of the River Mersey — making it one of the oldest strategically significant settlements in Cheshire. The ruins of Halton Castle still look out over the town from the hill, a reminder of its Norman past and its role as the seat of the powerful Barons of Halton.
Runcorn became one of England’s designated New Towns in 1964, growing rapidly to house families from Liverpool and North Merseyside. Its distinctive figure-of-eight expressway system connects directly to the A533 for Widnes and Liverpool, and the A56 corridor heading north-east towards Warrington and Thelwall passes through some genuinely pleasant Cheshire countryside.
CBT FAQ
The questions Runcorn riders actually ask us before they book.
Do I need to pay the Mersey Gateway toll coming from Runcorn?
Yes — if you’re driving to training from Runcorn via the Mersey Gateway, you’ll need to register and pay the toll through the Merseyflow system before midnight on the day of travel. It’s easy to do online or by phone, and if you use the bridge regularly you’ll probably already have an account. The alternative is to come via the A56 from Runcorn East, which takes you east along the south bank of the Mersey towards Warrington without using the bridge at all — it’s a similar journey time. And the good news: once you’re on a motorcycle, you’re exempt from the toll entirely.
Will the on-road training cover roads I might use on the Runcorn commute?
The on-road CBT training uses the mixed A and B roads around south Warrington — Stockton Heath, Thelwall, Grappenhall and the surrounding village lanes. These roads are very similar in character to the routes between Runcorn and Warrington: a mixture of A-road, village stretches and quieter residential roads. You won’t be taken back to Runcorn on your training day, but the road skills you build here will transfer directly. Once you’re licenced, the route north across the bridge into Warrington will feel very familiar and entirely manageable.
What are the best rides from Runcorn once I have my CBT?
Runcorn is genuinely well placed for riding. Head east on the A56 through Moore and you’re into the Cheshire countryside within minutes — Daresbury, Stretton and the roads towards Knutsford are quiet, well-surfaced and a joy on a 125. Head west from Runcorn and the roads through Frodsham and up to the Helsby and Frodsham hills offer some of the most scenic riding in Cheshire. When you’re ready to progress to your full licence, the motorway network — the M56 heading west and east — opens the whole North West. We’re here for that next step too.
