Getting Here by Car from Northwich

From Northwich town centre, the most direct route is to head north on the A49 through Hartford and towards Warrington. The A49 carries you through the Cheshire countryside, passing through villages like Higher Walton and Stretton before reaching the southern outskirts of Warrington. From there, follow signs towards Thelwall, turning onto Bell Lane in the heart of the village. Parking is available on site at the Parish Hall.

Alternatively, from the A556 — the main Northwich bypass — head north-east, connecting with the M56 and joining the motorway for a faster approach from the south. Exit at Junction 10 of the M56 and follow the A49 north into Thelwall. Either way, the journey takes around 20–25 minutes and takes you through some genuinely lovely Cheshire scenery.

Total journey time from Northwich is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes, so plan ahead on your training day.

By Train

Northwich, Greenbank and Hartford stations are all on the Mid-Cheshire Line connecting Chester to Manchester. However, there is no direct train to Warrington, so the bus remains the most practical public transport option for this journey.

About Northwich

Northwich is one of Cheshire’s most historically fascinating towns, with a story stretching back to Roman times. During the Roman period, Northwich was known as Condate — thought to derive from a Brittonic word meaning “Confluence” — sitting at the point where the rivers Weaver and Dane meet. The Romans were drawn here by the town’s extraordinary natural resource: salt.

Salt has defined Northwich for centuries. It is one of Cheshire’s famous “wich” towns — alongside Middlewich and Nantwich — and the industrial-scale extraction of salt in later centuries caused significant land subsidence across the town, leading to some buildings being constructed on rollers so they could be moved if the ground shifted. The A49 north from Northwich, the same road you’ll use to reach us, is the historic route connecting the salt towns to Warrington and beyond.

CBT FAQ

The questions Northwich riders actually ask us before they book.

Which route do you recommend from Northwich on the morning of training?

The A49 north is the most direct and reliable route — head through Hartford, pick up the A49 northbound and follow it through Higher Walton and Stretton before the signs bring you into Thelwall. It’s about 12–15 miles and takes 20–25 minutes in normal morning traffic. The alternative via the M56 Junction 10 is slightly quicker at busy times if the motorway is flowing. Either way, allow yourself a few minutes of buffer on the morning — we ask everyone to arrive 10 minutes before the start time for the kit check and briefing. Full address: Thelwall Parish Hall, Bell Lane, Thelwall, WA4 2SX.

I’m coming from the southern end of Northwich — is the A556 or A49 better?

From the southern end of Northwich or the A556 bypass, the M56 option is usually quicker — pick up the motorway eastbound and exit at Junction 10, then follow local roads north into Thelwall. From Northwich town centre or the north of town, the A49 north is cleaner as it avoids the motorway interchange. Either route works well; in light traffic there’s maybe 5 minutes’ difference between them. We’d suggest the A49 for your first visit as it’s more straightforward to follow and you pass through the village lanes that you’ll be riding on during training.

What are the best rides from Northwich once I have my CBT?

You’re in fantastic riding country. The lanes east of Northwich through Knutsford, Macclesfield Forest and into the Peak District are some of the finest in the North West — varied, well-surfaced and rewarding at any pace. Heading west, the Delamere Forest roads and the Frodsham hills are beautiful on a quiet morning. The A49 north to Warrington and Thelwall will already feel familiar once you’ve used it to reach us. When you’re ready for your full licence, we’re here — Module 1 and Module 2 training will open the motorways and let you make the most of everything that Cheshire and beyond has to offer.
