About St Helens

St Helens is a town built on two industries — glass and coal — and it excelled at both. At the heart of that glass heritage is Pilkington Brothers, founded in 1826, which went on to revolutionise construction worldwide when it introduced the float glass process in 1960 — a technology that changed the face of every high street and office building across the globe. The town’s industrial story is celebrated at the World of Glass Museum in the town centre.

Rugby league runs deep here — St Helens RFC are one of the most successful clubs in the sport’s history. The town sits 9 miles west of Thelwall, connected by the A580 and the M6. Once you’re licenced, the roads heading east through Newton-le-Willows and into Cheshire open up some genuinely rewarding riding country right on your doorstep.

CBT FAQ

The questions St Helens riders actually ask us before they book.

What’s the quickest route from St Helens to Thelwall on the morning of training?

The A580 east to Haydock, then M6 south to Junction 21A and the A49 Winwick Link Road south is the quickest in most conditions — around 18–22 minutes. The alternative all on A-roads via Newton-le-Willows and the A49 south is slightly longer but straightforward and avoids the motorway if you prefer. Both routes drop you into Thelwall from the north via the A49, and Bell Lane is well signed from the village centre. Parking is on site at the Parish Hall. We ask everyone to arrive 10 minutes before the start time — full address: Thelwall Parish Hall, Bell Lane, WA4 2SX.

Can I use a 125cc to commute from St Helens to Warrington once I’ve got my CBT?

Yes — and it’s a very practical commute on a 125. The A-road route via Newton-le-Willows and the A49 is all rideable on L-plates, and at 9 miles it’s a short, manageable commute that cuts through traffic in a way a car simply can’t. The one restriction with a CBT is that you can’t ride on motorways, so the M6 is off limits until you have your full licence. For a St Helens to Warrington commute that’s not a major issue — the A-road alternative is straightforward and you’ll be comfortable on it within a few weeks of riding. Once you’re ready to progress to a full licence, the M6 becomes available and the commute gets even simpler.

What are the best rides from St Helens once I have my CBT?

You’re well placed for both north and south. Head east through Newton-le-Willows and down into Cheshire via the A49 and you’re quickly onto the quiet lanes around Appleton, Stretton and Knutsford — beautiful country roads ideal for building confidence on L-plates. Head north from St Helens and the Lancashire roads through Rainford and Skelmersdale open up. When you’re ready for your full licence and the motorways, the whole North West is accessible — the M6, M62 and East Lancashire Road all radiate from your part of the world. We’re here for Module 1 and Module 2 whenever you’re ready.
