What is Direct Access?
Direct Access (often shortened to DAS) is the training and testing route that gives riders aged 24 or over an unrestricted full motorcycle licence, allowing you to ride any size motorcycle without an L-plate. Riders aged 19 to 23 can take Direct Access on a restricted A2 licence (up to 35kW / 47bhp). Riders aged 17 or 18 follow the A1 route on a 125cc bike.
Direct Access is made up of two practical tests — Module 1 (an off-road manoeuvres test) and Module 2 (an on-road riding test with a DVSA examiner). Before either test, you need a valid CBT certificate and a passed motorcycle theory test. Our DAS programme covers everything from your initial assessment ride through to taking your tests with confidence.
Which Motorcycle Licence Do You Need? A1, A2 or Full (A)
Your age decides your fastest route to a licence. Whichever route you take, it starts with a CBT and the motorcycle theory test (£23).
| Licence | Minimum age | What you can ride | How you get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| AM | 16 | 50cc moped | CBT + theory + practical test |
| A1 | 17 | 125cc | CBT + theory + Mod 1 & Mod 2 on a 125 |
| A2 | 19 | Restricted power (35kW) | CBT + theory + Mod 1 & Mod 2 on an A2 bike |
| A (full) | 24 (or 21 after 2 years on A2) | Any motorcycle | Direct Access — this course |
Aged 19–23 and don’t want to wait? Take your A2 licence training now and upgrade to a full licence later — or from age 24, go straight to Direct Access. Need your CBT first? Start with our CBT course in Warrington.
Your Direct Access Journey
Six stages from your first assessment ride to a full motorcycle licence.
1. Pre-Training Assessment
A short ride with your instructor to see where you are and agree the right amount of training. No two riders need exactly the same hours.
2. Slow-Speed Control & Machine Confidence
Mastering a heavier, faster bike — clutch control, balance, handling, and the slow-speed manoeuvres you will need for Module 1.
3. Module 1 Test Preparation
The figure of eight, slalom, U-turn, controlled stop, emergency stop and hazard avoidance — rehearsed on a real DVSA-spec test pad until you can do them in your sleep.
4. Module 1 Test
You take your Module 1 test at an official DVSA test centre. We will be there and we will ride to the test centre together on the bike you have trained on.
5. Module 2 Test Preparation
On-road riding with the instructor radio-linked behind you. We work on observation, road positioning, junctions, roundabouts, dual carriageways and the kind of decisions the examiner is looking for.
6. Module 2 Test & Full Licence
The forty-minute on-road test with a DVSA examiner. Pass and your full motorcycle licence is in the post within days.
Where You’ll Take Your Tests
We use three DVSA motorcycle test centres — Atherton, St Helens and Chester — around 30–45 minutes from our Thelwall base, depending on traffic. Your instructor books the centre that best suits your test date and where you live, and on test day we ride there with you so you arrive warmed up on a bike you know. Get ready with our Module 1 test preparation and Module 2 test preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Direct Access Scheme (DAS) training in Warrington?
The Direct Access Scheme (DAS) is the training and testing route to a full Category A motorcycle licence in the UK. On Your Bike offers DAS training in Warrington from £1,250 all-inclusive, covering Module 1 assessment, Module 1 DVSA test, and Module 2 road riding and DVSA test — all test fees included.
Who is eligible for DAS training in Warrington?
You must be at least 24 years old. If you have held an A2 licence for two or more years, you can take DAS from age 21. You also need a valid CBT certificate and a passed DVSA motorcycle theory test. On Your Bike accepts all eligible riders regardless of prior motorcycle experience.
How much does DAS training cost in Warrington?
On Your Bike’s full DAS package starts from £1,250 all-inclusive. This covers: Part 1 — Module 1 slow-speed assessment (from £225); Part 2 — Module 1 high-speed training, mock test and DVSA Module 1 test at the MMA (from £500, including MMA hire and test fee); Part 3 — Module 2 road riding and DVSA Module 2 test (£525, including test fee). You can book parts separately or as a full package.
What licence do I get after completing DAS?
After passing both Module 1 and Module 2 via DAS, you receive a full Category A licence. This allows you to ride any motorcycle of any engine size with no restrictions — no L-plates, no passenger restriction, motorway riding permitted.
Do I need a CBT before DAS training?
Yes. You must hold a valid CBT certificate before riding on the road during DAS training. You must also have passed the DVSA motorcycle theory test before booking Module 1 or Module 2 tests.
How quickly can I complete DAS in Warrington?
The speed of completion depends on your starting experience and how quickly you progress. On Your Bike will advise how many training days you need based on your ability. Most riders complete Module 1 preparation in 1–2 days and Module 2 preparation in 1–2 days. Call 01925 551 555 to discuss your situation.
Can I do Direct Access if I’m under 24?
Not the full A licence — but you don’t have to wait. From 19 you can take A2 licence training with us on a restricted bike, then upgrade to a full licence after two years (or take the DAS course at 24). From 17, the A1 licence on a 125 is available.
What’s the difference between DAS training and just riding on my CBT?
A CBT lets you ride a 125cc with L-plates for two years — no pillion, no motorways. Direct Access removes all of that: any size bike, motorways, passengers, and no L-plates, for life. If you’re commuting on the M6, M56 or M62 or want to carry a passenger, you need the full licence.
Where is the nearest place to do Direct Access near Warrington?
Right here — we run DAS training from Thelwall Parish Hall, Bell Lane, Thelwall, Warrington WA4 2SX, with your tests at the DVSA centres in Atherton, St Helens or Chester, around 30–45 minutes away. Riders come to us from Widnes, Runcorn, St Helens, Wigan and across Cheshire.
