What is Direct Access?

Direct Access (often shortened to DAS) is the training and testing route that gives riders aged 24 or over an unrestricted full motorcycle licence, allowing you to ride any size motorcycle without an L-plate. Riders aged 19 to 23 can take Direct Access on a restricted A2 licence (up to 35kW / 47bhp). Riders aged 17 or 18 follow the A1 route on a 125cc bike.

Direct Access is made up of two practical tests — Module 1 (an off-road manoeuvres test) and Module 2 (an on-road riding test with a DVSA examiner). Before either test, you need a valid CBT certificate and a passed motorcycle theory test. 1. Pre-Training Assessment

A short ride with your instructor to see where you are and agree the right amount of training. No two riders need exactly the same hours.

2. Slow-Speed Control & Machine Confidence

Mastering a heavier, faster bike — clutch control, balance, handling, and the slow-speed manoeuvres you will need for Module 1.

3. Module 1 Test Preparation

The figure of eight, slalom, U-turn, controlled stop, emergency stop and hazard avoidance — rehearsed on a real DVSA-spec test pad until you can do them in your sleep.

4. Module 1 Test

You take your Module 1 test at an official DVSA test centre. We will be there and we will ride to the test centre together on the bike you have trained on.

5. Module 2 Test Preparation

On-road riding with the instructor radio-linked behind you. We work on observation, road positioning, junctions, roundabouts, dual carriageways and the kind of decisions the examiner is looking for.

6. Module 2 Test & Full Licence

The forty-minute on-road test with a DVSA examiner. Pass and your full motorcycle licence is in the post within days.

Where You’ll Take Your Tests

We use three DVSA motorcycle test centres — Atherton, St Helens and Chester — around 30–45 minutes from our Thelwall base, depending on traffic. Your instructor books the centre that best suits your test date and where you live, and on test day we ride there with you so you arrive warmed up on a bike you know. How much does Direct Access cost in Warrington?

Riders who already have plenty of road experience often finish faster; riders new to bigger bikes typically need a little more time.

Do I need to do a CBT before I start Direct Access?

Yes. A valid CBT certificate (DL196) is a legal prerequisite for booking either Module 1 or Module 2. If you do not have one, we offer CBT training from £225 — most students do their CBT, ride for a while on L-plates, and then come back for DAS.

What is the difference between Module 1 and Module 2?

Module 1 is the off-road test held on the DVSA Motorcycle Manoeuvring Area. It includes the slow-speed manoeuvres, the figure of eight, the slalom, the controlled stop, the emergency stop and the hazard avoidance exercise. Module 2 is the on-road test, lasting around forty minutes, during which a DVSA examiner assesses your riding in everyday traffic. You must pass Module 1 before booking Module 2.

What licence do I get after passing Direct Access?

If you are 24 or over, passing Direct Access gives you a full unrestricted Category A licence — you can ride any size motorcycle without an L-plate. If you are 19 to 23 you receive an A2 licence, restricting you to bikes up to 35kW (47bhp) for two years before you can upgrade. Riders aged 17 or 18 follow the A1 (125cc) route.

What if I am under 24 — can I still do Direct Access?

Yes, with age-related restrictions on the size of bike you ride after passing. The training and tests are the same; the licence category and the bike you train on differ. We will recommend the right route during your initial chat.

What if I do not pass Module 1 or Module 2 first time?

You retake the test you did not pass. We will give you honest feedback on what to work on, run any extra preparation sessions you need, and re-book the test for you. Retests are £250 for Module 1 and £300 for Module 2, covering the DVSA test fee, instructor and bike hire. Most riders who do not pass first time pass on their second attempt.

Do I need my own motorcycle?

No. We provide the training bike and the test bike — the same machine for both, so there are no surprises on test day.

What kind of bike will I train on?

For a full unrestricted (Category A) licence, you train and test on a bike of at least 595cc and producing at least 40kW. For A2, you train on a restricted A2-compliant machine. We will explain which category applies to you and confirm the exact bike before your training starts.

A CBT lets you ride a 125cc with L-plates for two years — no pillion, no motorways. Direct Access removes all of that: any size bike, motorways, passengers, and no L-plates, for life. If you’re commuting on the M6, M56 or M62 or want to carry a passenger, you need the full licence.
