Getting Here by Car from Winwick

From Winwick, simply head south on the A49 Winwick Road — one of the main arterial roads running through Warrington from north to south. The A49 takes you through the north of Warrington and continues south towards the Manchester Ship Canal crossing, Stockton Heath and into Thelwall. It’s a road you’ll already know well, and it’s exactly the kind of mixed urban and semi-rural road you’ll build your early riding skills on during training. Parking is available on site at the Parish Hall.

By BUS

Bus services run from Winwick southbound into Warrington, from where the 5A bus (Warrington’s Own Buses) connects directly to Thelwall, stopping at the Pickering Arms. Bell Lane is a short walk from the stop. Total journey time is approximately 35–40 minutes. For most Winwick riders, the straightforward A49 drive is the easiest option — you’ll be at the training centre in under 15 minutes door to door.

About Winwick

Winwick is a village on the northern edge of Warrington with a history stretching back over a thousand years. The Church of St Oswald is one of the finest parish churches in Cheshire — a striking sandstone building with Norman origins and a remarkable carved boar on its exterior, reflecting the legend of St Oswald and a miraculous pig that reportedly guided the church’s construction.

The village is also the location of the Winwick interchange, where the M6 and M62 motorways connect via the A49 Winwick Link Road — one of the busiest motorway junctions in the North West. Once you have your full licence, that junction is your gateway to the whole motorway network. But the training starts right here, on the A49, learning the roads that connect your village to everything around it.

CBT FAQ

The questions Winwick riders actually ask us before they book.

The A49 through Winwick gets busy near the M6/M62 interchange — will that affect my journey to training?

The Winwick interchange can slow things down during the morning peak, particularly between 7:30 and 8:30am heading south. The good news is you’re going the quiet way — south towards Thelwall, not north onto the motorway — so you’ll mostly be leaving the heavy traffic behind you. Leave Winwick by 8:30 for a 9:00 start and you’ll be fine. Once you’re through the northern Warrington stretch the road opens up considerably, and from Stockton Heath to Thelwall it’s a straightforward 5-minute run.

I drive the A49 every day — does knowing the road already actually help on the CBT?

Genuinely yes. Hazard awareness — knowing where junctions are, which roads merge, where pedestrians tend to cross — transfers directly from driving experience. Our on-road CBT sessions use the A-roads and village lanes around south Warrington, many of which you’ll recognise from the A49 corridor. Experienced drivers often find the on-road portion of the CBT less daunting than complete beginners because they’re not discovering the roads for the first time. You’ll still need to learn the specific skills of motorcycle control, but the road knowledge you bring is a real head start.

Once I’ve got my CBT, can I use the A49 for my daily commute from Winwick?

Yes — a 125cc on L-plates is perfectly legal on the A49 and all other A-roads. The A49 south through Warrington and Stockton Heath is actually a very practical commuting road on a motorcycle — you can filter through stationary traffic legally and safely, which makes the Winwick interchange delays largely irrelevant on two wheels. Many Winwick riders find that what used to be a frustrating 30-minute commute becomes a 15-minute ride once they have their CBT. When you’re ready to lose the L-plates and get onto the motorway network, come back for the full licence — Module 1 and Module 2 — and the M6 and M62 are yours.
