Getting Here by Car from Burtonwood
From Burtonwood, head south on Burtonwood Road into Warrington, crossing the M62 and continuing south through Great Sankey or via the A57 to pick up the road south towards Thelwall. Bell Lane is well signed from the southern approach into the village.
Alternatively, the M62 westbound to Junction 8 (A49) gives a fast motorway connection that drops you directly onto the A49 heading south into Warrington and then Thelwall — useful if you’re coming during a busy period and want to avoid town centre traffic. Parking is available on site at the Parish Hall.
Getting Here by Public Transport from Burtonwood
By BUS
Local bus services connect Burtonwood into Warrington town centre, from where the 5A bus (Warrington’s Own Buses) travels directly through Thelwall, stopping at the Pickering Arms on Bell Lane — a short walk from the Parish Hall. Total journey time by public transport is approximately 40–45 minutes. Given the short distance, most Burtonwood riders find the car the most practical option on training day.
About Burtonwood
Burtonwood is a village in the north of Warrington, perhaps best known historically as the home of RAF Burtonwood — one of the largest airfield complexes in Europe during the Second World War, used as a major supply base for American forces. The site was later used by the USAF during the Cold War before closing in 1993, and much of the land is now an industrial and logistics park.
The village itself retains a strong community character, and its position near the M62 and M6 makes it well connected to the wider region. Once you have your motorcycle licence, those same motorway connections open up the whole of the North West — but it’s the quieter local roads heading south through Warrington and into Cheshire that make every ride worthwhile.
CBT FAQ
The questions Burtonwood riders actually ask us before they book.
What’s the best route from Burtonwood to Thelwall — through Great Sankey or via the M62?
Both work well depending on the time of day. Through Great Sankey and south towards Stockton Heath is the more scenic option and works perfectly outside of rush hour — allow around 15 minutes. If you’re travelling during the morning peak and want a cleaner run, the M62 westbound to Junction 8 drops you straight onto the A49 south, which bypasses the busier town centre roads. Either way you’re looking at 12–15 minutes in normal traffic, so leaving by 8:40 is plenty of time for a 9:00 start.
Burtonwood has a lot of history with the airbase — is there anything about the village’s road layout that’s useful to know before the on-road training?
Good question. The roads around the former RAF Burtonwood site are a mix of busier logistics routes and quieter residential roads — you’ll already have a feel for the difference between A-road riding and quieter back roads just from living here. Our on-road CBT sessions use the villages and A-roads south of Warrington around Thelwall and Grappenhall, which are much quieter than the logistics corridors you’re used to near the old airbase. Familiar with heavier traffic means the training roads will feel very manageable by comparison.
Once I’ve passed my CBT, what are the best rides from Burtonwood?
Head south and you’ll be in some of the best riding in the North West within minutes. The A49 through Warrington and into Cheshire is a natural first run — it takes you through Stockton Heath, past the training centre in Thelwall and out into open countryside towards Whitchurch. The lanes around Daresbury and Moore are ideal for early confidence-building. When you’re ready to push further north, the roads through Newton-le-Willows and into Lancashire open up a completely different kind of riding. Come back for the full licence when you’re ready — at 12–15 minutes from the training centre, you won’t have far to travel.
