About Culcheth
Culcheth is a village in the Warrington district of Cheshire, six miles north-east of Warrington town centre. Primarily residential with a large village green, it has a strong community feel, well-served by schools, local shops and sports facilities. The name Culcheth dates back to at least 1201 and derives from Common Brittonic words meaning “narrow woodland.”
The old railway line that once served the village is now the Culcheth Linear Park — a lovely green corridor popular with walkers and cyclists that runs through the heart of the village. The A574 connects Culcheth directly to Warrington, and the M62 is within easy reach for Liverpool and Manchester.
Once you have your licence, the quiet rural lanes heading east through Glazebury and Croft make Culcheth a fantastic base for riding in the North West — and with Thelwall just down the road, getting your CBT is about as straightforward as it gets.
CBT FAQ
The questions Culcheth riders actually ask us before they book.
I’m only 6 miles away in Culcheth — can I pop in to see the training site before I book?
You’re welcome to come and have a look before committing — just drop us a message first so we know you’re coming. Thelwall Parish Hall is easy to find on Bell Lane in the heart of Thelwall village, and seeing the off-road training area in person often puts people at ease, especially if you’ve never ridden before. At 10–12 minutes from Culcheth on the A574, it’s one of the quickest visits you’ll make before doing something that changes the way you get around.
I cycle the Culcheth Linear Park regularly — would that kind of fitness and balance help on a CBT?
It genuinely does. Balance and spatial awareness from cycling transfer well to slow-speed motorcycle control, and the core strength from regular cycling helps with handling the bike at low speeds. You won’t have a huge advantage on the faster road sections — motorcycle throttle control and braking are their own skills — but in the off-road training area you’ll likely feel comfortable on the bike sooner than someone who’s never had two wheels under them. Either way, we start from scratch and go at your pace.
Once I’ve got my CBT, what are the best local roads around Culcheth for building experience?
You’re brilliantly placed. The lanes east through Glazebury and Croft are quiet, well-surfaced and give you a great mix of straights and gentle bends at sensible speeds — ideal for the early weeks. The A574 back towards Warrington is a good mixed-road run, and once you’re feeling confident the M62 connects you to the wider North West (once you have your full licence — no motorways on L-plates). Many Culcheth riders come back to do Module 1 and Module 2 after six months or so on L-plates. Give us a call when you’re ready.
