About Ellesmere Port
Ellesmere Port is a town with a proud industrial heritage sitting at the southern edge of the Wirral Peninsula on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal. The town was originally established at the River Mersey entrance to the Ellesmere Canal, and has retained large industries including the Stanlow oil refinery and the Stellantis van manufacturing plant — one of the area’s biggest employers. For those who enjoy industrial history, the National Waterways Museum has the world’s largest collection of canal boats, right where the Shropshire Union Canal meets the Manchester Ship Canal.
The M56 connects Ellesmere Port directly eastwards towards Warrington and Manchester, and once you’re licenced, that same corridor opens up Cheshire’s finest riding roads — heading south from Junction 10 through Appleton and Stretton towards Knutsford and beyond.
CBT FAQ
The questions Ellesmere Port riders actually ask us before they book.
What’s the easiest way to get to training from Ellesmere Port without a car?
The train is your best option by a distance. Northern Trains runs a direct service from Ellesmere Port station to Warrington Bank Quay — it takes around 28 minutes and drops you close to the Bus Interchange. From there, the 5A bus runs directly through Thelwall, stopping at the Pickering Arms on Bell Lane. The key thing to check is the timetable: the Ellesmere Port to Warrington service runs six times a day Monday to Saturday, so make sure there’s a departure that gets you to us at least 10 minutes before your training start time. Book your train in advance and the whole journey is very manageable.
Is the journey from Ellesmere Port worth it for a one-day CBT?
Absolutely. The CBT certificate lasts two years and opens up a 125cc bike on L-plates on every public road except motorways — for many Ellesmere Port riders that means a completely transformed commute into Warrington, Chester or across the Wirral. The 24-minute drive or 55-minute public transport journey is a one-off investment for two years of riding freedom. We also run a tight, friendly training day — you won’t be hanging around. Most riders are surprised at how much ground they cover in a single day, from complete beginner to confident on-road rider.
What are the best rides from Ellesmere Port once I have my CBT?
You’re brilliantly placed for Cheshire and North Wales riding. Head east on the M56 (full licence required for the motorway) or, on L-plates, use the A roads east through Helsby and Frodsham towards Runcorn and Warrington — those Frodsham hills and the views over the Mersey estuary are spectacular on a clear day. Head south and you’re quickly into the Cheshire Plain, with the roads around Tarporley, Tarvin and Tattenhall being some of the finest in the county. Once you’re ready to go for your full licence, come back and see us — Module 1 and Module 2 training is available and the whole of North Wales opens up on a bike.
