About Appleton

Appleton is a leafy, largely residential area on the southern edge of Warrington, made up of several distinct neighbourhoods — Appleton, Appleton Thorn, and Higher Walton among them. The area is well regarded for its green spaces, good schools, and quiet residential lanes, sitting in the transition zone between Warrington’s urban fabric and the open Cheshire countryside.

The roads heading south and east from Appleton through Stretton, Hatton, and towards Knutsford are some of the finest local riding roads in the county — a mixture of open country roads, gentle hills and village lanes that make every ride genuinely enjoyable. Getting your CBT here means you’re learning on the roads you’ll use every single day.

CBT FAQ

The questions Appleton riders actually ask us before they book.

Which route from Appleton do you recommend on the morning of training?

Knutsford Road through Grappenhall is our favourite route from Appleton — it brings you into Thelwall from the east through quiet village lanes and takes under 10 minutes from most parts of Appleton. If you’re coming from the northern end of Appleton near Stockton Heath, Thelwall Lane heading directly south is arguably even quicker. Either way, park at the Parish Hall — there’s space on site — and follow signs for the training area. The morning start time is in your booking confirmation, and we ask everyone to arrive 10 minutes early so we can get through the paperwork and kit check before the briefing.

Will the on-road part of the CBT take me through roads I know around Appleton?

Very likely, yes. Our on-road CBT training uses the quieter A and B roads across south Warrington and the surrounding villages — and the lanes between Thelwall, Grappenhall and Appleton are exactly the kind of mixed roads we use. Riding roads you already know as a driver or pedestrian is a real advantage — you’re not simultaneously trying to navigate and learn to ride. Your instructor will be behind you on the radio throughout, and you’ll only head out onto the road once you’re confident on the off-road area. Many Appleton riders tell us that recognising the roads makes the whole day feel much less daunting.

Once I’ve got my CBT, what are the best rides from Appleton?

You’re perfectly positioned. The roads heading south-east through Stretton and Hatton towards the A50 and Knutsford are beautifully quiet — open country lanes with gentle bends, ideal for the first weeks on L-plates. Appleton Thorn sits right on the edge of that Cheshire countryside, so from your front door you’re genuinely minutes from some of the best roads in the county. When you’re ready to push further, the A49 south opens up the whole of rural Cheshire and eventually the Peak District. Many Appleton riders who come to us for their CBT end up returning for full-licence training — Module 1 and Module 2 — once they’ve had a season on L-plates. We’re practically on your doorstep when that day comes.
