About Thelwall
Thelwall is one of Warrington’s most characterful villages, sitting beside the Manchester Ship Canal and the River Mersey, with the iconic Thelwall Viaduct crossing overhead — one of the longest motorway bridges ever built in Britain at 4,414 feet, and when it opened in July 1963 it was the longest motorway bridge in use in Britain at that time.
The village has a genuine rural feel despite sitting within the Warrington borough. The Pickering Arms on Bell Lane is a local institution, and the canal-side walks towards Lymm and Warrington are some of the most pleasant in the area.
The quiet lanes of Thelwall village, Grappenhall and the surrounding Cheshire countryside are the perfect environment to build confidence as a new rider. There’s nowhere better to start your motorcycling journey than right here at home.
CBT FAQ
The questions Thelwall riders actually ask us before they book.
I live about 200 metres from the Parish Hall — do I still need to book in the normal way?
Yes — same booking process as everyone else, just a much shorter journey on the morning. The good news is you can pop in any time for a look at the off-road training area without it being a special trip. It’s your village, it’s your Parish Hall, and it’s a genuinely lovely place to spend a training day. Book online or give us a call and we’ll get you on the next available date.
Will the on-road training take me through Thelwall village itself?
Quite possibly, yes. Our on-road CBT sessions use the quieter A and B roads around south Warrington and the surrounding villages, and Bell Lane and the lanes around Thelwall and Grappenhall are exactly the kind of mixed roads we use for training. Riding roads you already know as a pedestrian or driver is a real advantage — you’re not trying to navigate and learn to ride at the same time. Your instructor will be behind you with radio contact throughout, and you’ll only go out when you’re ready.
As a Thelwall local, what are the best first rides once I’ve got my CBT?
You’re perfectly placed. The lanes through Grappenhall and down towards Lymm are quiet, well-surfaced and genuinely enjoyable — ideal for the first few weeks on L-plates. The canal-side roads towards Warrington give you some useful town riding practice, and when you’re ready to stretch your legs the A56 south through Altrincham opens up Cheshire properly. Many Thelwall riders who do their CBT with us end up coming back for the full licence — Module 1 and Module 2 — once they’ve had a season on L-plates. You’ll know where to find us.
