Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CBT certificate?

A CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) certificate is a mandatory training qualification you must complete before riding a moped or motorbike on UK roads. It covers basic safety checks, riding skills and road riding under supervision. On completion you receive a DL196 certificate valid for two years.

How long does CBT training take?

CBT training takes one full day, typically 7–8 hours. The day is split into five elements: an introduction and eyesight check, on-site motorcycle controls, on-site riding exercises, on-road preparation, and on-road riding with an instructor following on a separate motorcycle.

How much does CBT cost near Warrington?

CBT training at On Your Bike in Warrington starts from £130. The price includes use of a training motorcycle and full protective equipment if needed. There are no hidden extras — the theory test (£23 DVSA fee) is the only separate cost if you haven’t already passed it.

Do I need a CBT before I can ride a motorbike?

Yes. You must hold a valid CBT certificate before riding any moped or motorcycle on public roads in the UK, unless you are on a full car licence issued before 1 February 2001 (which includes automatic moped entitlement). A CBT is not a full licence — it is a prerequisite for learner riding.

How long does a CBT certificate last?

A CBT certificate is valid for two years from the date of issue. If you do not pass your full motorcycle test within that period, you must retake the CBT to continue riding legally as a learner. There is no limit on how many times you can renew your CBT.

Can I fail my CBT?

CBT is not a pass or fail test in the traditional sense. However, if your instructor believes you have not reached the required standard, they will defer your on-road element and you will need to rebook. Most candidates who arrive prepared and follow instructor guidance complete it on the day.

How old do I need to be for CBT?

You must be at least 16 years old to complete a CBT on a moped (up to 50cc). To ride a 125cc motorcycle on a CBT certificate you must be 17 or over. There is no upper age limit for CBT training.
