One-day Course From £225 — Bike, Helmet & Jacket Included

If you’re based in Manchester and looking to get your CBT or take the next steps towards your full motorcycle licence, our training centre at Thelwall Parish Hall, Bell Lane, Thelwall, Warrington, WA4 2SX is approximately 18–20 miles west — a quick run along the motorway network that takes around 25–35 minutes depending on where you’re starting from in the city.

Getting Here by Car from Manchester

From Manchester city centre, the most direct route is to head south on the A56 Chester Road through Stretford and Sale, continuing onto the A56 through Altrincham and Lymm, which brings you directly into Thelwall village. This is a scenic and straightforward route through South Manchester and Cheshire, taking around 30–40 minutes.

For a faster motorway option, head south on the A5103 from the city centre to join the M56 westbound at Junction 3A (Gatley). Travel west on the M56, joining the M6 northbound at Junction 9, and exit at Junction 20 (Lymm/Thelwall). From there it’s a short drive into Thelwall village. This motorway route takes approximately 25–30 minutes in normal traffic.

Both routes offer good options depending on where you’re starting from — the A56 is better if you’re coming from Stretford, Sale or Altrincham, while the motorway option suits those coming from the city centre, south Manchester or the M60 ring road. Parking is available on site at the Parish Hall.

Getting Here by Public Transport from Manchester

By TRAIN then BUS

Manchester has excellent rail connections to Warrington. TransPennine Express and other operators run frequent direct trains from Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Piccadilly to Warrington Central, with services every 20 minutes throughout the day and a journey time of approximately 23 minutes. Warrington Central is a short walk from the Bus Interchange, where you pick up the 5A bus (Warrington’s Own Buses) towards Lymm, alighting at Thelwall, Pickering Arms — Bell Lane and the Parish Hall are a short walk away. Total journey time from central Manchester is approximately 50–60 minutes.

It’s one of the best-connected public transport journeys of any of our catchment areas — frequent trains, a straightforward connection, and a reliable bus onwards to Thelwall.

About Manchester

Manchester is one of England’s greatest cities — a powerhouse of music, culture, industry, sport and innovation. It was at the heart of the world’s first Industrial Revolution, home to the world’s first inter-city railway, and has given the world everything from the Hallé Orchestra to Oasis, from graphene to two of football’s most famous clubs.

The city sits at the centre of the M60 orbital motorway, which connects to the M56, M62, M6 and M61 — making it one of the most motorway-connected cities in England. Once you have your motorcycle licence, those motorway corridors are joined by the fantastic roads heading south through Cheshire — the A56 through Lymm, the lanes around Knutsford and Tatton Park, and the quieter Cheshire countryside just beyond the city’s southern edge.

For Manchester commuters, a motorcycle licence can be genuinely transformative — cutting through the city’s notorious traffic and turning a 45-minute car commute into a 20-minute ride.

CBT FAQ

The questions Manchester riders actually ask us before they book.

Which route is better from Manchester — the M56 motorway or the A56 through Altrincham?

It genuinely depends on where in Manchester you’re starting from. If you’re in the city centre, south Manchester or near the M60, the motorway route (A5103 → M56 → M6 → J20) is quicker — usually 25–30 minutes in light traffic. If you’re already in Stretford, Sale or Altrincham, the A56 straight through Lymm into Thelwall is more direct and a nicer drive. Either way, once you reach Thelwall village you’re essentially there. We’d suggest leaving by 8:00 for a 9:00 start on a weekday — or jump on the train from Piccadilly and you’ll be at Warrington Central in 23 minutes.

I want to use my CBT for the Manchester commute — is a 125cc actually practical in city traffic?

For a lot of Manchester commuters it’s a genuine game-changer. A 125cc on L-plates is perfectly legal on all A-roads and B-roads — you can’t use motorways, but you don’t need to for most cross-city routes. The ability to filter through stationary traffic legally (when done safely and within the guidelines) means a 125cc can cover routes that would take 45 minutes in a car in 20 minutes on a bike. Many of our Manchester students do their CBT specifically to solve a commuting problem — and then come back for the full licence once they’ve caught the bug. If you need motorway access for longer distances, we can talk you through the Direct Access (DAS) route to a full unrestricted licence.

Once I’ve done my CBT, what are the best rides from Manchester?

Manchester has some exceptional riding just beyond its edges. The A56 south through Lymm and into Cheshire is a great starting point — smooth, varied and not too demanding. From there the lanes around Knutsford, Tatton Park and Macclesfield open up a whole different kind of riding. Head north and the moors above Oldham and Saddleworth give you big skies and long straights. And when you’re ready to go further, the Snake Pass (A57) over the Peak District is a rite of passage for Manchester riders. Come back for your full licence when you’re ready and we’ll help you plan it properly.
